How to Delete an eBay Account

The popular auction site eBay allows people to list items for sale, and buyers around the world can bid on them. The company, founded in 1995, makes its money by charging fees for listing and advertising items, as well as a small commission on the final sale price of the item. As of 2009, eBay had more than 88 million active accounts worldwide. Opening an account is easy. Deleting an eBay account is a little more complicated.

Instructions:

1) Complete all pending transactions on your account. This includes paying for any items you have won at auction or requesting a refund if you have excess funds in your account.

2) Resolve any disputes. You cannot close an eBay account if there are any pending disputes.

3) Submit a request to close your account. There will be a short waiting period as eBay makes sure your account does not have any outstanding issues, and then your account will be closed.

4) Wait for the account to be closed. Once the account is closed, eBay keeps only the personal information that it needs to assess system troubles or that is required by law.

Tips and Warnings:

Users can just deactivate their seller account, rather than their entire account, by removing their payment information on the seller account page. If you do this, make sure you delete any subscriptions to avoid accruing charges in the future. As with closing your account entirely, you need to make sure your seller account balance is zero, so make any necessary payments or request a refund. If you delete your account, you will lose all the feedback that others left for you. If you later decide to open another account, you will have to rebuild your reputation from scratch. You cannot close your account if it is suspended by eBay for a dispute until the dispute is resolved.
